1998 marked the LA Scots' first full year in Grade One, and the first time in the Grade One circle at the World Championships. The format of the Grade One contest at the Worlds was also new for 1998. Any band that finished below 6th Place in 1997 was required to play an MSR in the morning for one of the six remaining spots in the finals (along with the top six bands from the year before.)
The LA Scots placed 7th in the morning's preliminary round, missing the finals by one place. That left the band at 13th Place overall the first time in Grade One!

On August 16, 1997, the Los Angeles Scottish Pipe Band became the first pipe band from the USA to win the prestigious Grade Two World Pipe Band Championships. This was the 4th time the LA Scots have traveled to Scotland in as many years in an effort to win the coveted title of Grade Two World Champions. In its first effort in 1994 the band placed an amazing 4th in a field of 36 bands winning the best overseas band. The next two years brought more trophies from Scotland and Northern Ireland including a tie for first in 1995 at the World Championships. Then in 1997 the band tried for a 4th time for the championships and this time met with success, and what success it was. In all the LA Scots won 5 of the 6 winning trophies (just missing the overall Marching and Deportment trophy) the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association gives out and all three of the musical trophies giving the LA Scots a clean sweep of the prize list.
